Features
- Nickname: Dudley
- Characteristics: Donkeys are related to horses and zebras. Donkeys have larger ears than horses. Their longer ears may pick up more distant sounds. Donkeys can defend themselves with a powerful kick of their hind legs as well as by biting and striking with their front feet. Donkeys are slower and less powerful than horses but they are extremely intelligent animals. They have a strong sense of survival and if they think something is dangerous they simply won’t do it. They are particularly patient and persistent animals and as a result make excellent pack animals. Sounds like a donkey would make a great friend.
- Height & Weight: Donkeys range considerably in size, depending on breed and management. Most domestic donkeys range from 0.9 to over 1.4 m tall.
- Where they live: There are about 44 million donkeys today. China has the most with 11 million, followed by Ethiopia and Mexico. But there are donkeys on farms all over the world. The donkeys coat is not waterproof so he needs some shelter from the rain.
- What they eat: Donkeys are vegetarians and are grazing animals. Their natural food is grass but being semi-desert animals they do best on tough, low-calorie food such as straw. They also love carrots, apples, oranges and sugar-beet pulp but won’t eat tomatoes, onions, cabbage, lettuce, cucumber or bananas.
