We have traveled quite extensively with our 2 and 5 year-olds and found that the key to travelling happy is making sure each child has an adequate ‘play surface’. The philosophy behind this site is first to provide the child with an appropriate ‘play surface’, then to find toys, activities, books and games that are appropriate for that play surface, mode of travel, age, skill level etc.
Here are some reasons we feel a tray system is important:
- a tray gives a child a reliable play surface
- a tray helps minimize frustration with losing parts, sliding pieces, by containing activities.
- a tray helps adults rest assured that the surface they are playing on or eating on is clean
- a tray can be a constant familiar thing no matter where the child goes
- the adult can tailor toy, activity, or game choice to the type and size of play surface
- a tray allows the toy, activity, game to be removed off a child's lap without having to be put away for rest stops, bathroom trips, adjusting seat belts etc.
Each item on this site will list which ‘trays’ work best for each activity, which modes of travel the item is best for, recommended ages, and more. We are happy to assist you if any explanation is unclear. If you are NOT interested in purchasing any type of tray (keep in mind, however, the basic Mulit-Craft Tray is free with a $49 or more purchase) we do have information on items that require NO tray.
We hope this approach to travel will enable your child to expand his/her range of travel appropriate toys and activities and make the journey as enjoyable as the destination.
Although we have tried most trays in most travel mode situations, this is not an exact science. Your child may have different skill levels or preferences, so please use this tray recommendation guide as such, just a guide. We have done our best to provide you with as much information as possible.
